During the first 3 months of my fieldwork research part of my MPhil I worked on a construction site for a project that I designed and took through planning back in 2012.
The 132m2 extension to a medium sized family residence in the South West of England had a very simple brief, with an interesting palette of materials, most notably, a 55m long oak frame extension.
Connection. Joint. Regulations. Procurement.
I spent the first few weeks procuring building materials, engaging with oak frame contractors, engineers and building regulation draftsmen to plan the next few months of construction.
The most interesting part, and most important to my thesis, was the interaction with the oak frame contractors and the procurement process.
With the extension now in full swing, I felt it necessary to document its current stage on-site.
